PROBLEM: An integer overflow with subsequent buffer overflow has been
detected in PCRE, the Perl Compatible Regular Expressions
library. Applications such as Snort (Release 2.1 and later),
Python, nmap, Apache, and PHP use PCRE internally.
PLATFORM: Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 alias woody
               Red Hat Desktop (v. 3 and v. 4)
               Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS, ES, WS (v. 2.1, v. 3, v. 4)
Red Hat Linux Advanced Workstation 2.1 for the Itanium Processor
			   Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 alias sarge
SGI Advanced Linux Environment 3, ProPack 3, Service Pack 6
			   Solaris 10 Operating System
DAMAGE: Allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code.
SOLUTION: Upgrade to the appropriate version.

Date Reported:
02 Sep 2005
Affected Packages:
pcre3
Vulnerable:
Yes
Security database references:
In the Debian bugtracking system: Bug 324531.
In the Bugtraq database (at SecurityFocus): BugTraq ID 14620.
In Mitre's CVE dictionary: CAN-2005-2491.

An integer overflow with subsequent buffer overflow has been detected in PCRE,
the Perl Compatible Regular Expressions library, which allows an attacker to
execute arbitrary code.

Since several packages link dynamically to this library you are advised to
restart the corresponding services or programs respectively. The command
``apt-caches showpkg libpcre3'' will list the corresponding packages in the
"Reverse Depends:" section.

For the old stable distribution (woody) this problem has been fixed in version
3.4-1.1woody1.

For the stable distribution (sarge) this problem has been fixed in version
4.5-1.2sarge1.

For the unstable distribution (sid) this problem has been fixed in version 6.3-1.

We recommend that you upgrade your libpcre3 package.
